How to care for kanduras and abayas between cleans
Wash kanduras with other whites only, and abayas inside out with dark colours or on their own. Avoid high heat, dry both in the shade, and press at the temperature the care label allows. Send embellished, embroidered or delicate abayas and stained kanduras for professional cleaning.
How do I keep a white kandura bright?
White fabric shows everything, so the routine matters more than any product.
- Wash kanduras only with other whites. One coloured sock is enough to dull a load.
- Treat the collar and cuffs before washing. Skin oils collect there and turn yellow if they are left.
- Do not overload the machine. Fabric needs room to move for the detergent to rinse out.
- Dry in the shade. Strong direct sun can yellow some fabrics over time.
How do I stop a black abaya from fading?
Black fades from heat, friction and harsh detergent. Turn the abaya inside out, use a gentle cycle with cool water, and wash it with dark colours or on its own. Skip the tumble dryer if you can and hang it to dry away from direct sunlight.
Check the care label first. Many abayas are made from crepe, chiffon or blends that are marked dry clean only, and anything with embroidery, beading or crystals should not go in a home machine.
What is the right way to iron them?
Press kanduras while they are still slightly damp, or use steam, and work from the collar down. For abayas, iron on the reverse side at a low temperature, or put a thin cloth between the iron and the fabric. This prevents the shiny marks that a hot iron leaves on dark synthetic fabrics.
How should I store them?
Hang both on wide hangers so the shoulders keep their shape, and leave a little space between garments so they do not crease. Make sure they are completely dry before they go into the wardrobe, especially in humid months.
When should I use a professional service?
Send the garment for cleaning when a stain has not come out at home, when the fabric is delicate or embellished, or when you simply want a crisp professional press for work or an occasion. Tell us what caused the stain if you know. It helps us choose the right treatment.
Questions and answers
Can abayas be dry cleaned?
Yes. Many abayas are labelled dry clean only, and dry cleaning is the safer choice for embellished, embroidered or delicate fabrics.
Do you press kanduras?
Yes. Kanduras and ghutras are pressed and returned on hangers. You can send them for pressing only or with washing.
