How It Works and Which Clothes Need It

Dry cleaning is a way of cleaning clothes with a liquid solvent instead of water. The name is misleading, because clothes do get wet, just not with water. Water makes fibres like wool, silk and rayon swell, shrink or lose their shape. A solvent removes oils, grease and body soil without that damage. That’s why suits, silk dresses and structured garments come back looking the way they did on the day you bought them.

Below, we explain what happens to your clothes step by step, which garments need dry cleaning, and how to tell from the care label.

Why is it called dry cleaning if it isn’t dry?

The term dates back to the 1800s, when cleaners discovered that some petroleum-based liquids could clean fabric without water. Because no water was used, the process was called “dry.” Modern dry cleaning still works on the same principle, with far more refined solvents and machines. Today’s machines clean, filter and recover the solvent inside one closed unit, so very little is wasted.

How does professional dry cleaning work?

Every good dry cleaner follows roughly the same process. Here is what happens to your garment after we collect it.

Step 1: Inspection and tagging. Each item is checked for stains, loose buttons, tears and delicate trims, then tagged so it can be tracked through the whole process.

Step 2: Pre-treating stains. Stains are treated by hand before cleaning. Tell us what a stain is (coffee, oil, perfume, makeup) because it helps us choose the right treatment.

Step 3: Cleaning. Garments go into the dry cleaning machine, which gently tumbles them in solvent. At Grand Laundry we use [name of your solvent].

Step 4: Rinsing and drying. The solvent is drained, filtered and recovered, and the clothes are dried inside the machine. They come out dry to the touch.

Step 5: Final spot check. Each garment is inspected again. Any remaining marks get another treatment.

Step 6: Pressing and finishing. Garments are steamed and pressed by hand, then hung or packaged ready for delivery.

Which clothes should always be dry cleaned?

Some fabrics and garment types almost always need a professional clean.

Suits and blazers. Water can distort the internal structure of the shoulders and lapels.

Silk. It can lose its sheen, water-mark or shrink in a washing machine.

Wool coats and knitwear with a “dry clean only” label. Wool fibres can shrink and felt in hot water.

Embellished abayas and evening dresses. Beads, sequins and embroidery can loosen or snag in a washer.

Wedding dresses. Delicate fabrics and hidden stains, like sugar from drinks, need specialist care.

Leather and suede. These need specialist cleaning and conditioning.

How do I read a dry cleaning care label?

The care label is your best guide. A plain circle means the item can be dry cleaned. A circle with a cross through it means it shouldn’t be. Letters inside the circle tell the cleaner which solvent is suitable: P and F refer to different solvent types, and W means professional wet cleaning. If a label says “dry clean only,” trust it. When a label is missing or unclear, bring it to us and we’ll advise.

Is dry cleaning bad for your clothes?

No. When done properly, dry cleaning is one of the gentlest ways to clean fabric. It avoids the agitation, heat and shrinkage of a home wash cycle. Over-cleaning any garment will eventually wear it, so there’s no need to dry clean a suit after every wear. Airing it out and spot cleaning between visits is usually enough.

How often should you dry clean your clothes?

Suits: every 4 to 6 wears, or after a visible stain

Silk blouses and dresses: after every 1 to 2 wears, especially in Abu Dhabi’s heat

Wool coats: once or twice a season

Formal abayas and evening wear: after each event

Frequently asked questions

How long does dry cleaning take?
At Grand Laundry, standard dry cleaning takes [X days]. Same-day service is available when you book before [cut-off time].

Can dry cleaning remove all stains?
Most stains come out, especially if they’re treated quickly. Some older or heat-set stains can be permanent. Try not to rub or iron a stain before bringing it in.

Does dry cleaning smell?
A properly cleaned garment should smell fresh and neutral. A strong chemical smell usually means the solvent wasn’t fully dried.

Can I dry clean an item labelled “machine washable”?
Usually yes, and it’s often a good choice for structured or delicate items. Ask us if you’re unsure.

Dry cleaning is a way of cleaning clothes with a liquid solvent instead of water.
